Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps you to focus your mind on the positives in your life rather than the negatives, when we focus on the positives, we are able to come up with our own solutions.
There are times in life when we all feel under pressure, overwhelmed or lacking motivation and I’m sure we have all experienced some of these thoughts over the past few weeks of lock down. Let’s understand why our brains focus on the negatives around us and what we can do to help ourselves.
Our brains are naturally wired to pick up on the negative experiences in our lives because they have evolved to respond quickly to situations that might be dangerous or life threatening. This was a great asset for the caveman, but not so useful for us nowadays, as we rarely encounter true life-threatening situations.
This type of thinking is called ‘negative bias’ and it was originally thought that it was our sensory organs, our ears, eyes etc that took in all the detail around us and then the brain, along with these details, was able to make the decisions required.
Two psychologists, Arien Mack and Irvin Rock, wrote a book in 2000 called ‘Inattentional Blindness’ which found that when we are were asked to focus on one element in a situation, we could be blind to anything else that is going on. How many did you count? I found them really tricky to follow! Most people missed the gorilla in the video or didn’t give it much attention – which is odd as it stands out when we re-frame our thoughts. This shows us that what we focus our energies on becomes our fixed perception. By dragging our negative thoughts around, our perspective stays in that same frame and we add to it, focusing on only the undesirable and often destructive elements of our lives.

In each session we discuss how the brain works and why we negatively forecast events, how we get stuck in our negative ways of thinking and how this becomes our natural way of life.
The client plays an essential role in this therapy by forming their own goals and imagining the future that they desire. This allows them to move to a more positive and fulfilling life.
